Looking for Serendipity

Master photography KASK Gent

I curated the exhibition Looking for Serendipity for the Master of Photography in KASK Gent. The exhibition was on show from 23rd of January until the 2nd of February 2020 at KASK in Gent.

The Master students Photography presented the fourth edition of the ‘MasterExpo’, an annual exhibition in the Zwarte Zaal.

In today’s society serendipity is hardly present, since it is our tendency to live our lives according to prescriptive frames and routines. The artists in this exhibition intentionally included the unexpected in the process of creating and editing their projects.

As curator, I perceived the potential of this group exhibition through the sum of its individual works. In what way could the different artistic positions manifest itself more profound in context of others? The proposed scenography invites to wander around the artist’s imaginations, his ethical choices and storylines which potentially keep resonating during the various encounters within the exhibition space.

The moment of exhibiting the work opens up a conversation with the audience: a dialogue between the intention of the photographer and the visitor who on his part feels persuaded to look, interact and explore.

Looking for Serendipity is the fourth edition of the Master-expo, taking place after the exhibitions We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful (2017, curator: Anne-Françoise Lesuisse), Camping in the Millimeters’ Kingdom (2018, curator: Mathias Nouel) and Tussen droom en daad (2019 curator Joachim Naudts).
