Sister Love

Jantien de Bruin

In collaboration with Jantien I worked on the installation of her personal project Sister Love for Museum of the Mind in Haarlem. The work is part of a permanent exhibition.

Jantien de Bruin (1971 ) is a filmmaker and photographer.  Safety, memory and loss are key elements in her photographic and filmic work. The subjects De Bruin deals with seem romantic, but through the visual language they evoke often an uneasy feeling. She aims to create an intangible field of tension. It is often this combination of intimacy and detachment that although stems from a very personal experience, results in a universal meaning.

The installation Sister Love consists of multiple objects including photographs, videos and a letter. After her sister committed suicide in 2015, De Bruin felt a strong need to reconnect with her and preserve the memory of her sister. She explored their family photo albums and found a way to cope with the grief: looking back into the past. Additionally, she travelled to Switzerland to retrieve their shared memories and captured new images in the mountains where they had spend their youth.

In addition to the installation in the museum, De Bruin produced a book which reveals a complementary experience.
